Milbert’s Tortoiseshell
Feature Film. Coming of Age Comedy. 115 Pages. Final Draft.
“A young man with Asperger's hitchhikes across the country to deliver his pet caterpillars to the love of his life while evading his verbally abusive, white-trash brother who will stop at nothing to take him back home.”
Growing up with an Autistic younger brother and his classmates, as well as a cousin and uncle both with Asperger’s, I am a firm believer that some of the funniest and outrageous stories come from the most innocent places.
My goal in writing this project was not only to highlight a group of people whom I love and want to see represented but to inform the audience that there is a difference between laughing at someone because of their disability and laughing with someone who has a disability. I hope my writing can encourage an understanding of these impairments that helps the audience feel comfortable in making that distinction for themselves.
Dark Ages
Animated Pilot. TV-PG Musical Comedy. 36 Pages. Second Draft.
“Liberated from a vengeful God's omnipotence for the first time, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse rampage through Medieval times with only two goals in mind: Deliver the end of Humanity and have fun doing it. But after the end-times are put on hold, the group must learn to live in harmony with the people they were sent to destroy.”
Think of the show as a goth pre-teen; angsty and rebellious, but non-threatening. Family-friendly with edge. Although the themes are dark, such as the demise of the human race, the heart of the story is about empathy and answering the question:
“What makes humanity worth saving?”
Plant Life
Animated Pilot. TV-PG Comedy. 35 Pages. Final-ish Draft.
“With the absence of humans but all the spoils of humanity, a new civilization forms when Nature reclaims the earth. When two budding plant adolescents seize the role of mayor from a morally bankrupt sociopath, they must rebuild a decaying society from the ground up.”
After nuclear fallout eradicates human life, radiation grants sentience to Nature. With the tools and infrastructure of modern-day America but no knowledge of its past, will the Plants continue where we left off? Or will they find new meaning in what we’ve left behind?
“If we had to solve tomorrow’s problems with no memory of yesterday’s solutions, would we end up in the same place?”
Renaissance Teen
Animated Pilot. Comedy. 38 Pages. Final Draft.
Co-written with Evvy Hofmeister.
A hack, wanna-be renaissance man takes on an uncooperative teen artistic genius as his apprentice to boost his social status in 14th century Italy.
As part of a challenge in a writing group, this script was written to completion in just 24 hours.
Get Outta Dodge
Schitt’s Creek Spec Script. Sitcom. 35 Pages. Final Draft.
Co-written with Jared Fembleaux.
“Roland challenges Johnny to a community-wide Dodge-ball match, and David retaliates when Johnny chooses Patrick for his team instead of him. A depressed Moira finds a spark of excitement when Alexis gives her free reign on her very own halftime show.”
A spec script for the (at the time) unwritten final season of Schitt’s Creek.
Assembled Student Body
Animated Pilot. Adult Comedy Cartoon. 35 Pages. First Draft.
Co-written with Luka Stojcic.
“As the Assembled Student Body is aflutter in preparation for the Spring Pep Rally, two elected ‘jag-offs’ set out to reclaim their friend’s honor when they discover the ulterior motives behind the event.”
An expose of the absurdities of Student Government, showcased through misinformed high school politics, incredibly offensive dance routines, hell-spawn faculty, and industrial revolution-esque child labor.
The Spirit of Competiton
Animated Pilot. Adult Comedy Cartoon. Pre-Development.
“The unhinged, yet undeniably genius, boardgame developer behind ‘Jumanji’ is back with a plethora of new life-threatening past-times. Assigned to keep lawsuits to a minimum, a Corporate Stooge struggles to protect the focus group of children who trial-run the games from certain death.”
Imagine a mashup between Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Jumanji, The Magic Schoolbus, and Daddy Daycare. Add in a dash of Lord of the Flies and you have The Spirit of Competition. A lunatic, a focus group of children, and their legally appointed guardian enter into new worlds, with new objectives, and new ways to risk life and limb, week after week.
Through parodies of iconic and corny boardgames of the past, The Spirit of Competition asks the question:
“How far will you go to win?”
